High time that GoI abolishes AFSPA: NC
Srinagar,
Mar 6 (KNS): Expressing deep anguish and concern over the present situation in
valley National Conference Wednesday said, “Time has come now when government
of India
(GoI) should take serious steps to abolish the much awaited and hated Armed
Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA). Member
Parliament and senior NC leader Mehboob Beg said, “Under the grab of (AFSPA) security forces have enjoyed
enough unbridled powers. Power without accountability is a dangerous weapon in
the hands of forces who open fire at unarmed youth without any fear.” “If India claims that a great reduction is
witnessed in infiltration and militancy in Kashmir then what is their point in
continuing with this draconian law?” questioned Beg while talking to
KNS.
He
further said, “When GoI speaks so confidently regarding the normalcy about Kashmir then people have every right to be given its full
benefits also.” Blaming India for focusing on short term solution for Kashmir
issue beg said, “Government of India sends its interlocutors for a temporary
cooling effect only when it sees Kashmir burning and once situation becomes
visibly under control it forgets everything and believes as if everything is
alright here”. Beg said, “In 2009 when the Rail at Wanpu was flagged off by
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah I warned Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi that they
should not misunderstand the apparently peaceful situation of Kashmir
and urged them for an immediate political solution to the sixty year old conflict.”
He had told them that any delay would
yield only unfavorable consequences.
He
said, “For NC autonomy is the best solution to the Kashmir
issue. We are fighting for autonomy and we will continue our struggle in all
the democratic forms.
Talking on autonomy
Beg said, “India
should restore its autonomy if its intentions are sincere towards the state.
Justice Sageer report has also confirmed that Autonomy is a concrete document

Not right time to repeal AFSPA in J-K:
Cong
New Delhi: Amid renewed demands for repeal of
AFSPA by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, National Conference's
alliance partner Congress today said the time was not right for it and rejected
the contention that the central government was being blackmailed by army on
this. "AFSPA was not brought in by the army and rather by the political
executive of the state and considering all the opinions and reading on the
ground, the government would take decision as and when required," party
spokesman Sandeep Dikshit told reporters.
He insisted that Congress stand is clear that it is for the government
to decide and we should leave it at that. "Our hands are tied and that
doesn't mean that the government is being blackmailed by the army," he
said.
Asked
about J-K Congress leader Saifuddin Soz pleading for the repeal of AFSPA from
the Valley and whether this is the party's viewpoint, Dikshit said, "This
is his view and that there have always been demands about withdrawing of AFSPA
and it is being considered by the government." He said that armed forces
and other authorities who are directly connected with dealing with issues of
J&K have said that this is not the right time to repeal AFSPA and "we
stand by that". On the question whether army is making it difficult for
Omar, Dikshit said that he wouldn't want to comment on what inspired the chief
minister to become emotional. He said that there are issues in J&K and
there is greater presence of paramilitary forces in the state and nobody
recognises the fact that more number of paramilitary forces are required in the
state. "However, on the other hand and there might be chances that certain
paramilitary forces may be doing something that may not be politically tenable
for them." He noted that J-K is gradually moving towards greater peace.
"The fact is that J&K (now) is a much more different and integrated
state of the Union of India and we should all welcome that," he said.
